Our 1998 Alaska RV Birding Vacation began May 22nd and ended July 31st in San Jose, California. The route was California, Oregon, Washington, BC, Yukon, Alaska, Yukon, BC (with a jog up to Northwest Territories), Alberta, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California. It included a 5 day, 4 night Alaska Air trip from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.
The main purposes were to 1) drive the Alaska Highway, and 2) birdwatch along
the way. Probably in reverse order of importance.
Our life birdlist stood at 444 when we left San Jose. We hoped to reach 500 on the trip.
I originally emailed weekly reports to a set of friends and relatives (after each week was wrapped up) we wanted to torture, by borrowing or renting a telephone line at an RV Park or other establishment. I'd then connect my Apple PowerBook 540C, which has an internal modem, to the phone line, connect to America Online, and off I'd send them. This is a compilation of those reports.
For this homepage version, I've made a few changes to the original email. Birds seen for the first time on the trip, and mentioned in the text, are indicated in upper case, like this: TRIPBIRD. If one of these trip birds is a bird we've never seen or heard before (i.e. a life bird), an asterisk is added, like this: LIFEBIRD*.
I'm told that my writing got better as the weeks and miles rolled by. I know it got longer, so my conclusion is that there's a thirst for reading the detailed adventures of two 54-year-old, mildly handicapped, RV travelin' birders. Well, thanks for listening. I can't tell you how much fun it's been. But I can try.
If you're way more of a birder than you are interested in the day to day events of travelling to Alaska in an RV, I'd skip to the middle of Week 2 or the beginning of Week 3.
