LUTMAN'S KENYA 2006 BIRDING SAFARI TRIP

GEOGRAPHY

Kenya is in east Africa, as shown in the map below.

BACKGROUND

When we birded Costa Rica in February 2005, we were lucky to sign up with Steven Easley for several half-days and a full day. We loved him -- both his personality and his birding ability. It turned out that he had spent four years living in Kenya, and learning all the birds -- both appearances and voices. At that time he was already leading several trips a year to Kenya. We decided then and there to go to Kenya with him as the guide sometime in the future.

OBJECTIVES

Go to Africa, a new continent for us
Be safe
Have Steven Easley be our guide
Minimize cost per bird
Hit the 2000 life birds mark
Send back emails with photos during our trip

EXPECTATIONS

Our life bird list (of the approximately 10,000 species on the planet) was at 1772, and we were hoping to see about 600 birds on the trip, of which we hoped about 450 of those would be life birds on this adventure.

HOPES AND DREAMS, PLANS AND SCHEMES

Map of Kenya. Shows the path of our tour, including sleeping lodges.

RESULTS

The group as a whole saw or heard 598 species. Of these, Sharon and I saw or heard 579 species in the 18 days, including 508 life birds. This brings our total life bird count from 1772 to 2280. Bird #2000 was a White-crowned Shrike, near Baringo Country Club on November 6.

I think we have a reasonable shot at 3000 species in our lifetime before we become too rickety to bird. Then we'll switch to TV birding.

NOTE: This 508 value disagrees with the 505 bird total, listed in the last daily report. I will find the source of disagreement.
